Diary of a Female Sports Fan

Being a lady is hard. You know what’s harder? Being a lady who likes sports! You never know enough, your opinion doesn’t matter and it’s hard to find other ladies who like it just as much as you do. As a Boston Red Sox DIE HARD fan I know this all a little too well. So today on the blog we are talking about the top 3 most annoying things about being a female sports fan.

NUMBER ONE: Never knowing enough!

If I had a dollar for ever time I said “I love baseball” and it was immediately followed by a quiz on the entire sport I would have enough money to buy baseball. All of it, the whole sport. It happened just the other week! I said I was a Red Sox fan and some guy asked me who the MVP of the World Series was. The question alone was insulting enough, how could I be a fan and not know that?! The answer was Steve Pearce, but the fact that I even had to prove my fandom was irritating enough.

NUMBER TWO: Your opinion doesn’t matter!

This one gets me, because you could know everything about anything and it still doesn’t matter! I bartend at a sports bar, so a lot of the conversations I have with guests are about sports. I never chime in on topics I know nothing about, but it wouldn’t matter! I was rattling off statistics on who else but the Red Sox and not only did I receive a quick google search to check my stats, but i was also told that I was just repeating what I heard on tv. Even if I had made a valid point, it was credited to the sports anchor, and my option was invalidated.

NUMBER THREE: Where are my sports ladies at?!

The worst about being a girl and liking sports is being forced to watch those sports with the same guys who say you don’t know enough or that your opinion doesn’t matter. I have been so unlucky when it comes to finding female friendships that share the same enthusiasm for sports as I do. Luckily there’s Facebook! At the beginning of this past baseball season i was determined to get a solid group of ladies together to watch the games with. With the help of Facebook I was able to find the best gals that gather at a local Irish pub to watch the games. It made all the difference this season!

Okay, rant over, but seriously how annoying?! If you’re a girl trying to find some peace in cheering on her favorite team, look me up on Facebook! I’m always down to drink a little beer, watch a little sports, and I promise I won’t quiz you or make you feel dumb!

xoxo Alex
